When I was at school, it was apparent to me that some of the brightest students were unable to read. This was unfortunate as reading is not only about getting a job, but it is also an essential tool for learning and exploring new ideas. When we read we absorb information from the words in the text, this process is referred to as lexical comprehension. It is a skill that most adults retain. In fact, the ability to read well is the foundation for a variety of skills that we use in everyday life. However, many young people do not develop the skills needed to read well. In a 2012 research paper, published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology, Dr Susan Wilt and her colleagues identified specific characteristics of young children who have trouble with reading comprehension. The research found that children are likely to have difficulties reading if they have parents who do not read to them and are not exposed to books, are spoken to in an authoritarian way and if their parents do not reward reading time. It is important that we understand that not all children have these issues and some may have positive experience of reading. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that children who read less have problems with literacy. The research published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology found that children who are spoken to in an authoritarian way had the most difficulties with reading comprehension, particularly if they had a long-term attitude towards reading. It is worth remembering that research into language development suggests that children become fluent readers in the second year of life. However, reading fluency does not guarantee good reading comprehension. There are a range of factors that contribute to making children skilled and efficient readers.
